Project 009:
Feed and Grow, Kathmandu
This project is to support the Community Child Rescue Centre Lalitpur near Kathmandu, Nepal. The project was started by an enthusiastic group of volunteer young Nepalis nearly three years ago. |

| Situation as at October 2007 | |||
| Headed by Mrs Mary Malla, the centre receives children from the local police who find these children abandoned. There are 4 child care workers employed to care for 10 babies and 8 toddlers up to 6 years old. The staff earn $47 AUS per month. Rent is $151 per month for 3 rooms and no yard. 1 packet of babies formula milk costs $5 and lasts one day. When we visited in October 2007 they had just enough milk for two more days and no budget beyond that. What they need is to move to new premises ($377 a month), upgrade these premises with basics like paints and carpet, water filter ($2000) and then ongoing operating costs of about $2 per child per day ($13,134/year) to provide basic support to their human dignity. Currently they literally just surviving on what they can get day to day. | |||
| Situation as at December 2008 | |||
Much has happened. The costs are now around $3 per day per child. Dharmik Australia is the now the only funding provider because in December 2008 we received news that the American donor who was giving $1400 a month had to withdraw due to the financial slowdown. Dharmik in December 2008 is faced with a crisis in how to replace those funds. Dharmik has some limited financial reserves, so we can continue for approximately six months, but naturally we must find new funds now. There are some articles about CCRC on our news page. |
