Project 008:

Our Own Home, Kathmandu

This project is a long term dream, at this stage in late 2007. We will need a few hundred thousand Australian dollars to do it. When we first met our Nepali partners, we both expressed a desire to help children and old people.

We want to buy land and build a domestic facility to house these children and also a refuge for elderly people.  The whole process needs to be repeatable and sustainable. The facility would be for approximately 20 children, 5 adults and 10 aged persons. The entire system needs to be self supporting and also supportive of its local community. Consideration needs to be given to all aspects of life within this community and its links with the broader community. Included will be an education centre where other groups can receive training in various areas of key capability built in this centre (e.g. establishment of vegetable garden). As part of this process we will research best practice in other Nepal residential establishments, with a view to becoming a model for best practice.
